Devon @ COP29

It’s increasingly clear that “climate change, biodiversity loss and resource depletion are not isolated problems”.

And that includes in the West Country, with Dorset putting on its own climate change conference last week, in an event which looked those interlinked issues, from renewable energy and carbon capture to the circular economy and sustainable transport.

Meanwhile in Azerbaijan, the COP29 conference is well under way – with participants from the West Country also there.

Yesterday the University of Plymouth put on an event looking at Ocean–Climate–Society: A multisector approach for mitigation, adaptation, finance and capacity building – an area its academics have considerable experience with.

An exciting place to access online for free is the COP29 Virtual Ocean Pavilion from the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, dedicated to raising the visibility of the ocean and showcasing why the ocean matters in climate negotiations and to all life on our planet.

Meanwhile, the University of Exeter has put together We Are The Possible, bringing 12 powerful climate stories and children’s voices to the heart of COP29 in Azerbaijan – one for each day of the global conference – reflecting upon the plight of the planet and to inspire actions to create a greener, healthier, and fairer future.

Councils are doing their bit broadcasting the COP29 and their own messages, including some COP29 Torbay case studies and West Devon striving for a greener future. And the Local Government Association has looked at the importance of local government’s role in sustainability.

Finally, in today’s Sidmouth Herald we look at key questions about the UN climate conference – and in a letter to the editor of the Exmouth Journal, here’s hoping that COP29 combines ambition and action.
