Drawing from Nature @ Sidmouth Eco Hub – ‘looking at the natural world’ with local artists

The theme of Drawing from Nature @ Sidmouth Eco Hub this month takes a creative tilt at the natural world – as reported by Bernie Davis:

Drawing from Nature

The June topic for Eco Hub Sidmouth is ‘Drawing from Nature’ to extend the focus on nature and biodiversity experienced at the Sid Valley Nature Festival earlier in June.

On the 14th June, Kathy Gray, an artist and illustrator, was at the Tourist Information Centre providing many beautiful hedgerow flowers and greenery from her farm to provide a focus for drawing from nature.

Coming up is the final Eco Hub session before the summer break, which will take place on 28th June at the Library from 11:00-1:00.

We are fortunate to have Rebecca Lockyear, a local artist, who would like to invite you to come and experience drawing from nature. The session will be informal and open to all approaches however Rebecca will be happy to offer input and tips if desired. She will bring some natural inspiration from her garden in the form of flowers, greenery, vegetation, brush and shrubbery to compose a still life or to spark imagination and creativity.

In this session participants will be looking at the natural world, which we are part of. Just as every flower, every leaf, every rock is both similar to its fellow but also unique, so you are also unique. Nobody who has every lived, or who will ever live, will make a drawing exactly like your own. It is unique to you. One aspect of drawing is your relationship with your subject, exploring it, studying it, recording it in a way that means something to you. So, one person might wish to convey something particular about a flower or leaf and seek to accomplish that from the outset. Another person may simply allow the pencil to take them on a journey of lines and folds, without a particular outcome in mind. The intention is to enjoy the natural world, learning about and connecting with it using whatever technique or method you prefer.

On the day a variety of materials will be available to use at the library, but you can bring your own pencils, pastels or paints if you prefer.

This is the last session before the summer break so do come along and have a go! News of further Eco Hub Sidmouth sessions will be promoted through the library in September.
