Together for Tomorrow: the new initiative at Sidmouth Library

For the first half of this year, the Eco Hub Sidmouth was meeting regularly at the Library, showcasing what groups in the Sid Valley are doing to help families and communities become more resilient as the climate and the world changes.

And after its summer break, the Eco Hub will be making the Library its regular base – and will be meeting up there to look ahead on Tuesday 26th August – when “anyone interested in learning about or contributing to the Eco Hub Sidmouth in the future can pop along to find out!”

The Library is an ideal place for the Eco Hub for many reasons.

There is the ongoing (and recently relaunched) Sidmouth Library Nature Table – which features a real nature table (!) as well as social media and some good conversations.

The Libraries Unlimited organisation behind the Sidmouth base is very much committed to Climate Action –  in that “they are community hubs that inspire learning, creativity, and positive change.”

And a key part of this is the new initiative Together for Tomorrow:

Libraries Unlimited, in partnership with Resource Futures (through CAG Devon), are spearheading this project, which will transform libraries into vibrant community spaces dedicated to reuse, repair and sustainable community action, creating lasting change at a local level.

And so Libraries Unlimited and grassroots groups have joined forces for a region-wide programme backed by the National Lottery:

Communities across Devon are set to benefit from a major new climate action initiative thanks to £1.5 million in National Lottery funding… Running over a five-year period, the programme will support the transformation of these spaces into hubs where local people can take sustainability-focused action: from establishing repair cafés and community fridges to growing schemes, sewing groups and workshops on low-waste living.

Chief Executive of Libraries Unlimited, Alex Kittow, has said:

“Devon faces a range of climate-related challenges—from coastal erosion and flooding to declining biodiversity, poorly insulated homes, and limited public transport, which forces people to rely on cars. Tackling these issues requires local, adaptable solutions shaped by the people they affect.

“Libraries are at the heart of our communities, so it makes perfect sense for them to be a catalyst for change. Together for Tomorrow will bring people together through collaboration, creativity and shared learning – creating a model of community-led climate action that others across the UK can follow. Real change starts where people are – and for many, that’s their local library.”

And so this new climate action initiative is to transform Devon libraries;

The project’s vision – ‘more people, doing more things, more of the time’ – is focused on inclusion, resilience, and community connection.

The Eco Hub Sidmouth and the Climate Awareness Partnership Sidmouth will be very pleased, then, to be part of this focus on climate action.

See you on 26th August at the Library!
