Reduce/Reuse/Recycle @ the Sidmouth Eco Hub

The Sidmouth Eco Hub has been setting up stall at the Library and Tourist Info Centre every month – and each with a new theme.

In January it was energy – with an appearance by Exeter Community Energyoffering free advice on keeping cosy and info on the CAPS/Town Council’s free thermal imaging survey.

Last month the theme was food – focussing on local food – including the Sidmouth Community Food Forest and a showing of the documentary ‘Six Inches of Soil’: documentary plus a panel of local farmers.

All good quality, pretty useful stuff!

This month it’s all about reduce/reuse/recycle – which covers a lot of course.

And the two sessions will be between 11am and 1pm:

  • SATURDAY 8TH MARCH AT THE TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE
  • SATURDAY 22ND MARCH AT SIDMOUTH LIBRARY

Entry is free and open to all – so do come along to see what’s up!

SIDMOUTH REPAIR CAFÉ

To represent and to chat through some of the issues, there will be members of the Sidmouth Repair Café on hand.

Here’s one fixer at work at one of the monthly sessions – although the Repair Café can’t promise to fix your bike at the Eco Hub:

Nor will everyone in the team be in attendance – but the enthusiasm certainly will:

The Sidmouth Repair Café is very much a green initiative making an impact – as a blurb from the district council on support for local community action groups recently announced:

One of the groups that has benefited from membership is Sidmouth Repair Café, which last year prevented 1.35 tonnes of waste, avoided nearly three tonnes of carbon emissions and saved consumers over £9,000 by repairing electrical items like vacuum cleaners and radios and mending clothes, bags and teddy bears – all through volunteers’ time worth nearly £16,000. The café operates on the last Saturday of every month (except August and December) from St. Francis Church Hall in Sidmouth.

They certainly do make an impact – and at the Sustainable Sidmouth Champion Awards, the Sidmouth Repair Café won the group prize:

EAST DEVON RECYCLING

Also staffing the Eco Hub stall will be officers from the district council’s Recycling and Waste department.

And indeed their website has a lot of help and advice, for example:

Today they have announced the new East Devon plans for future Waste and Recycling Services – all in the context of being “a leader in waste management”:

  • Ranking 6th in the amount of recycling collected in England.
  • A move towards an electric vehicle fleet for its recycling operations.

The council’s Facebook pages are full of regular features on how the council can help us to reduce/reuse/recycle. Here’s a recent posting with some good conversations, urging us to Be a Super-Recycler and be Recycling Sack Savvy:

So, do come along on Saturday 8th March to the Tourist Information Office for more conversations!
